99 W10.16 in Hifi & Musik2011 / 08 / 05This test's real muscle sub comes from XTZ and the glossy black 99W10.16 is both the heaviest and most threatening sub. We have previously reviewed the 12" version (H&M no 11/8) and this downsized version has a 10" woofer and a smaller cabinet, but the same amplifier. In a clever way, two bass reflex ports with different length offers four different acoustic tuning options together with the included foam plugs. Anything from no damping at all for the loudest bass, to fully plugged for a more controlled bass. One foam plug inserted in the shorter port (right one) offers a kind of hillbilly bass, as somebody put it, but basically a snappy mid bass kick, or in other words a heavy horse kick punch in the upper low bass area. This can work wonders for unforgivably thin rock records (latest High on Fire!). But for the best bass, the most controlled, we achieved when both ports are plugged. This purely acoustic adjustment makes the electronic options EQ1 and EQ2 almost unnecessary. Possibly useful on movie- or party occasions. The high pass filter was more useful - especially for vinyl enthusiasts as it can cut away the lowest subwoofer frequencies and act as a subsonic filter. Very nice to get rid of bumpy vinyl records rumble. As a final bonus, in excess of the usual low level- and extra chunky high level input connectors, XTZ also offers a balanced XLR input - very useful when running long cables between amp and subwoofer. Together with REL, XTZ supplies the most generous and expanded bass performance. Yes, without the control provided by plugging the ports XTZ becomes unrestrained bombastic lacking the resilience and the distinct punch as Amphion and REL provided. But the bass excels in terms of purposeful depth and raw pondusn (not an english word), and the character can be severely tightened by plugging the ports. Have a look at the price and everything is forgiven! The 12in Peerless XXLS driver is very good indeed and its metal cone is pistonic, uncoloured and tight. Divine 100.49 in Hifi & Musik2010 / 10 / 01"I can honestly say that I have a hard time finding any real drawbacks with the sound from the Divines. The sound stage is large in every direction, and the soundscape presented at that possesses a remarkable depth. All this at the same time as the speakers manage to present a presence of the recordings, still maintaining the calm to avoid listening fatigue. These are some scary high resulution music reproducers, and that may demand some of the auxiliary equipment, not only to restrain the 10 inch bass drivers, but also because the ceramic drivers are not precisely aiding inferior recordings. On the contrary, I have to reward the Divines for not rejecting less perfect recordings like some other speakers do. Even an early Bob Marley-recording is well treated. The sound is mainly open and clear, without being experienced as anything but uncoloured and neutral. You have to be prepared that the ceramic drivers do take many (well invested) hours of playing in time. To get some perspective, we also listened to a similarly priced competitive model from another brand during this review just to compare.
